The Japanese Paradise Flycatcher is one of Japan’s most elegant summer forest birds. In Japanese it is called サンコウチョウ / Sankōchō. It is famous for the adult male’s long flowing tail, bright blue eye-ring, and graceful flight through shaded woodland.
The male has a glossy dark head, blue eye-ring, chestnut-brown upperparts, pale underparts, and very long ribbon-like tail feathers during the breeding season. The female is shorter-tailed and more modest, with brownish upperparts and pale underparts. Young males may look female-like at first and develop longer tail feathers as they mature.
In Japan, the Japanese Paradise Flycatcher is mainly a summer visitor. It arrives in spring, breeds in forests, and migrates south in autumn. It prefers shaded broadleaf forests, mature woodland, wooded valleys, streamside forests, and forested foothills.

サンコウチョウは、夏鳥として日本へ渡ってくる優雅で美しい野鳥です。
日陰の多い広葉樹林、混交林、山地の谷、沢沿いの林、静かな林縁などで
見られます。オスは光沢のある暗い頭、青いアイリングとくちばし、
栗褐色の背中、淡い下面、そして繁殖期に伸びる非常に長いリボン状の
尾羽が特徴です。
薄暗い森の中で行動することが多く、枝の間を軽やかに移動しながら、
短い飛翔で昆虫を捕らえます。森の奥から聞こえる美しい鳴き声も印象的で、
流れるような長い尾と優雅な姿から、日本の夏の森林を代表する
記憶に残る鳥のひとつです。
