Birds Of Japan 32:Daurian redstart-日本の野鳥32: ジョウビタキ Japan Bird Watching
Daurian RedstartジョウビタキScientific name: Phoenicurus auroreusThe Daurian Redstart is one of Japan’s most familiar and beautiful winter birds. In Japanese it is called ジョウビタキ / Jōbitaki. It often appears in parks, gardens, farmland, riverbanks, forest edges, and even around houses during the colder months. The male has a silver-gray crown, black face, orange underparts, dark wings with a bold white patch, and an orange tail. The female is softer brown-gray with an orange tail and the same white wing patch. Both sexes often flick or shiver the tail while perching upright. Suntory’s bird guide describes the male’s silver-white head, black face, reddish-brown belly, and the female’s grayish-brown body with a white wing patch.Recently, a few breeding records have increased in places such as Hokkaido and highland areas of central Honshu, but for a normal field-guide card, it is still best shown mainly as a winter bird in Japan.

Daurian Redstart ジョウビタキ

The Daurian Redstart is a small, charming winter visitor often seen in gardens, parks, farmland edges, riverbanks, orchards, and open woodland areas in Japan. The male has a striking black face, silvery-gray crown, orange underparts, and a bright orange tail, while the female is softer brown with warm orange tones on the tail and rump.

Active and alert, this bird often perches on fences, posts, branches, or stones, flicking its tail while watching for insects and other small prey. It also feeds on berries and small fruits during winter, and its sharp calls are a familiar sound in cold-season gardens and open habitats.
