GoldcrestキクイタダキScientific name: Regulus regulusThe Goldcrest is Japan’s smallest wild bird, only about 10 cm long and weighing around 5–6 g. In Japanese it is called キクイタダキ / Kiku-itadaki, meaning something like “chrysanthemum on the head,” because of the bright yellow crest on the crown. Males can show a stronger orange-red line inside the yellow crest, especially during display.It is a tiny, restless forest bird, usually seen moving quickly through conifer branches while searching for insects and spiders. Its call is very high-pitched, sometimes difficult to hear clearly, and it often joins mixed flocks with tits and other small birds in winter.

The Goldcrest is one of the smallest birds found in Japan, often seen in coniferous forests, mixed woodlands, mountain forests, parks, and tree-rich areas during the colder months. It has olive-green upperparts, pale underparts, a tiny pointed bill, and a bright yellow crown stripe that gives the bird its name.

Very active and restless, the Goldcrest moves quickly among needles, branches, and leaves while searching for tiny insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Its small size and constant movement make it a charming but sometimes difficult bird to observe closely.

キクイタダキ Goldcrest

キクイタダキは、日本で見られる鳥の中でも特に小さな野鳥のひとつです。 針葉樹林、混交林、山地の森林、公園、樹木の多い場所などで見られます。 オリーブ色の背中、淡い下面、小さく細いくちばし、そして頭頂にある 黄色い線が特徴で、その名の由来にもなっています。

とても活発で落ち着きなく動き回り、針葉樹の葉、枝、葉の間をすばやく 移動しながら、小さな昆虫、クモ、その他の小さな無脊椎動物を探して 食べます。体が小さく動きも速いため、近くでじっくり観察するのは 少し難しいですが、とても魅力的な小鳥です。
