Brown-eared Bulbul ヒヨドリ
The Brown-eared Bulbul is a familiar medium-sized songbird commonly seen in gardens, parks, forests, orchards, farmland edges, and urban areas across Japan. It has gray-brown plumage, a slightly crested head, a long tail, and a distinctive brown patch behind the ear, which gives the bird its name.
Lively and vocal, this bulbul often moves through trees and shrubs while giving loud, sharp calls. It feeds on fruits, berries, nectar, flower buds, and insects, and is especially noticeable around flowering trees such as plum, cherry, and camellia during the colder months and early spring.
