Grey WagtailキセキレイScientific name: Motacilla cinereaThe Grey Wagtail is a slim, elegant wagtail with a long tail, gray upperparts, and bright yellow underparts. In Japanese it is called キセキレイ / Ki-sekirei, meaning “yellow wagtail.” It is usually seen walking along rocks, river edges, streams, ponds, and wet paths while constantly wagging its tail.In Japan, the Grey Wagtail is strongly connected with clear flowing water, especially mountain streams, river valleys, and mid-to-upper river areas. It may also appear around ponds, lakes, parks, and city rivers, especially outside the breeding season. Canon’s Japanese bird guide describes it as common near flowing water and especially preferring the middle to upper parts of rivers. For your map: show it widely across Japan, but mark it as a waterside species, not a bird evenly spread through all habitats. It breeds broadly from Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and nearby islands, while in winter it is more common from Honshu southward, including warmer islands.

Grey Wagtail キセキレイ

The Grey Wagtail is a slender and elegant waterside bird often seen along clear streams, rivers, mountain brooks, ponds, and wet forest edges in Japan. It has a long tail, gray upperparts, bright yellow underparts, and graceful movements that make it easy to notice near flowing water.

Active and alert, this wagtail walks and runs along stones, banks, and shallow water while constantly wagging its long tail. It feeds mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, often catching prey near the water’s edge or in quick, light flights above the stream.
