Red-flanked Bluetail ルリビタキ Scientific name: Tarsiger cyanurus
The Red-flanked Bluetail is one of Japan’s most beautiful small mountain birds. In Japanese it is called ルリビタキ / Ruribitaki. The adult male is especially striking, with vivid blue upperparts, a bright blue head and back, orange-red flanks, and a white eyebrow. The female and immature birds are mainly olive-brown, with a warm orange tail and flanks.
In Japan, the Red-flanked Bluetail is closely associated with mountain forests, subalpine woodland, dwarf pine, bamboo grass, and forest edges. During the breeding season it prefers cooler, higher elevations. In winter, many birds move down to lower mountains, woodland edges, parks, and gardens, making them easier to encounter.

The Red-flanked Bluetail is a jewel of Japan’s mountain forests. The brilliant blue male, marked with vivid orange-red flanks and a white eyebrow, is one of the most beautiful sights in Japan’s highland woodland. Females and young birds are more subtly colored, with warm orange tails and flanks. The ルリビタキ breeds mainly in cool mountain habitats and often descends to lower elevations in winter, bringing a flash of blue to forests, parks, and gardens.

The Red-flanked Bluetail is a small and striking songbird of mountain forests, woodland edges, and shrubby habitats in Japan.
