Eurasian Bullfinch ウソ Scientific name: Pyrrhula pyrrhula

The Eurasian Bullfinch is a beautiful, compact finch of Japan’s mountain forests. In Japanese it is called ウソ / Uso. The male is especially striking, with a soft gray back, black cap, black wings, and a warm reddish-pink breast. The female is more subdued, with a brownish-gray breast, but both sexes have the distinctive rounded shape and thick seed-cracking bill.

In Japan, the Eurasian Bullfinch is mainly associated with mountain forests, subalpine woodland, coniferous forests, and forest edges. It is particularly noticeable in winter when birds may descend to lower elevations in search of buds and seeds.

The Japanese population is represented by the Japanese form Pyrrhula pyrrhula griseiventris, which is sometimes treated separately from other Eurasian Bullfinch populations. The species as a whole has a very broad distribution across Eurasia.
