チョウゲンボウは、日本の開けた草地、農地、河川敷、海岸平野、 牧草地、市街地の周辺などで見られる小型のハヤブサの仲間です。 長く尖った翼、長い尾、鋭い爪、褐色の背中にある黒い斑点が特徴です。 オスは灰色の頭と尾を持ち、メスは全体的に褐色で横斑が目立ちます。

空中で羽ばたきながら一点に止まるように見えるホバリングを行い、 地上の獲物を探すことでよく知られています。主に小型哺乳類、 昆虫、トカゲ、小鳥などを捕らえ、草地や開けた地面で動きを見つけると すばやく急降下します。軽やかなホバリング飛行は、日本の開けた風景の中で とても見分けやすい特徴です。
