Rose-Ringed Parakeet
ワカケホンセイインコ
Scientific name: Psittacula krameri
The Rose-Ringed Parakeet is a bright green parakeet with a long pointed tail and a strong red bill. In Japanese it is called ワカケホンセイインコ / Wakake-honsei-inko. The male has a clear black and pinkish neck ring, while the female usually lacks the strong ring or shows it only faintly.
This species is not native to Japan. It was originally from parts of Africa and South Asia, but escaped or released birds have formed feral populations in several countries, including Japan. In Japan, it is best known from urban and suburban areas, especially around the Tokyo metropolitan region, where it uses parks, temple grounds, large trees, gardens, and city green spaces.
Habitat: Urban parks, gardens, temple grounds, large roadside trees, suburban woodland
Range in Japan: Introduced/localized feral populations, mainly around the Tokyo–Kanto area
Diet: Seeds, fruits, buds, flowers, nuts, grains, and cultivated plants
Season: Year-round resident where feral populations are established
Size: About 40 cm including the long tail
Nesting: Uses tree cavities, building gaps, or other sheltered holes
Behavior: Noisy and social; often flies in groups; roosts communally in large trees
Conservation: Non-native introduced species in Japan; local populations should be treated carefully in ecological records
The Rose-Ringed Parakeet is a colorful introduced bird that has established local feral populations in Japan, especially around the Tokyo metropolitan area. With its bright green body, red bill, long tail, and loud calls, ワカケホンセイインコ is easy to notice in city parks and large trees. Although attractive and popular to observe, it is not a native Japanese species, so it should be shown on maps as a localized introduced bird rather than a natural wild bird of all Japan.
