It has a rounded body, short tail, pointed bill, and a very good diving ability. When disturbed, it often disappears underwater suddenly and comes up again several meters away. In breeding plumage, the Little Grebe has a rich reddish-brown neck and cheek area. In winter, it becomes duller brown and pale, making it look softer and less colorful.
