Little Grebe カイツブリ Scientific name: Tachybaptus ruficollis The Little Grebe is the smallest grebe found in Japan. In Japanese it is called カイツブリ / Kaitsuburi. It has a rounded body, short tail, pointed bill, and a very good diving ability. When disturbed, it often disappears underwater suddenly and comes up again several meters away. In breeding plumage, the Little Grebe has a rich reddish-brown neck and cheek area. In winter, it becomes duller brown and pale, making it look softer and less colorful. It is usually seen alone, in pairs, or with small family groups. The Little Grebe is a small freshwater diving bird commonly found on Japan’s ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow rivers. It often dives suddenly and surfaces far away, making it a lively and sometimes tricky bird to photograph. During the breeding season, pairs build floating nests among reeds and water plants, and the chicks may ride safely on the parent’s back. The カイツブリ is one of Japan’s most charming wetland birds, small in size but full of character.
