Little Egret
コサギ
Scientific name: Egretta garzetta
The Little Egret is a small, elegant white heron commonly seen around Japan’s rivers, rice fields, ponds, tidal flats, and wetlands. In Japanese it is called コサギ / Kosagi, meaning “small egret.”
It has a slim white body, long black legs, black bill, and bright yellow feet. The yellow feet are one of the best identification points, especially when comparing it with larger white egrets. During the breeding season, it develops beautiful thin ornamental plumes on the head, chest, and back.
In Japan, the Little Egret is usually seen walking slowly in shallow water, then quickly striking at fish, shrimp, frogs, insects, and other small aquatic animals. It may also stir the water with its bright yellow feet to flush prey.
Habitat: Rivers, rice fields, ponds, marshes, lakes, estuaries, tidal flats, coastal shallows
Range in Japan: Widespread in suitable wetland habitats, especially central and southern Japan
Diet: Small fish, shrimp, frogs, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and small animals
Season: Year-round in many warmer areas; more seasonal in northern regions
Size: About 55–65 cm
Nesting: Nests colonially in trees, often with other herons and egrets
Behavior: Walks actively in shallow water; may use yellow feet to disturb prey
Conservation: Common and widespread, but healthy wetlands, rivers, and rice-field environments are important.
The Little Egret is a graceful white wetland bird often seen in Japan’s rivers, rice fields, ponds, and tidal flats. Its black bill, black legs, and bright yellow feet make it easy to identify among Japan’s white egrets. It hunts by walking through shallow water and striking quickly at small fish, shrimp, frogs, and insects. The コサギ is one of Japan’s most elegant and familiar waterside birds.
