Japanese Bush Warbler ウグイス Scientific name: Horornis diphone The Japanese Bush Warbler is one of Japan’s most famous songbirds. In Japanese it is called ウグイス / Uguisu, and its spring song “hō-hokekyo” is strongly connected with the arrival of spring in Japanese culture. It is often called the “spring herald” in Japan, but it is much easier to hear than to see because it hides deep in bushes and bamboo grass. Its body is plain olive-brown to grayish-brown, with a pale eyebrow line and a slender shape. Male and female look very similar, so for a card it is better to show the bird as a general species image rather than strong male/female color differences. Canon lists its total length as about 14–15.5 cm. In Japan, it lives in dense bushes, bamboo grass, forest edges, open forest undergrowth, grasslands, and mountain scrub. Bird Research describes it as widely distributed in dense thickets and bushes from coastal areas to alpine regions, with preference for forest-edge bushes and open forest areas from montane to subalpine zones.

Japanese Bush Warbler ウグイス

The Japanese Bush Warbler is a small, shy songbird famous for its beautiful spring song in Japan. It is often found in bamboo thickets, dense shrubs, forest edges, gardens, parks, riverbanks, and mountain bushy areas. Although its voice is very familiar, the bird itself is often hard to see because it stays hidden in thick vegetation.

This bird has plain olive-brown plumage, pale underparts, a slim body, and a quiet, secretive appearance. It feeds mainly on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates while moving low through bushes and bamboo. Its clear song is strongly associated with early spring in Japan.
