The Oriental Greenfinch is a familiar small finch of Japan. In Japanese it is called カワラヒワ / Kawarahiwa. It has a thick seed-eating bill, olive-brown body, yellow-green tones, and bright yellow patches on the wings and tail. These yellow wing flashes are very noticeable when the bird flies.
The male usually looks brighter, with stronger yellow-green coloring, while the female is duller and more brownish. Both sexes have a compact finch shape and often gather in small groups, especially outside the breeding season.
In Japan, the Oriental Greenfinch is commonly seen in farmland, grassland, riverbanks, parks, gardens, orchards, forest edges, and open woodland. It often feeds on seeds on the ground or perches on wires, trees, and shrubs. Its call and song are light, rolling, and cheerful.

カワラヒワ Oriental Greenfinch
カワラヒワは、日本の庭園、公園、農地、河川敷、草地、林縁、
開けた里山などでよく見られる身近なアトリ科の野鳥です。
オリーブ褐色の体、太く淡い色のくちばし、翼と尾にある黄色い模様、
そしてコンパクトなフィンチらしい体つきが特徴です。
小さな群れで行動することが多く、草、雑草、樹木、栽培植物などの
種子を主に食べます。波を描くように飛ぶときには、翼の黄色い部分が
明るく見えます。やわらかな鳴き声と活発な動きで、畑、河川敷、
住宅地の緑地などでも親しまれている鳥です。
