Eurasian Wren
ミソサザイ
Scientific name: Troglodytes troglodytes
The Eurasian Wren is a very small, round-bodied bird with a short tail that is often held upright. In Japanese it is called ミソサザイ / Misosazai. It has warm brown plumage with fine barring, a pale eyebrow line, and a tiny compact shape. Although small, its song is surprisingly loud, powerful, and full of energy.
In Japan, the Eurasian Wren is mainly a bird of forests, mountain streams, damp valleys, mossy rocks, fallen logs, and dense undergrowth. It is often found near water, especially in shaded ravines and cool woodland. It moves quickly through roots, rocks, and low vegetation, so it is often heard before it is clearly seen.
Habitat: Mountain forest, stream valleys, ravines, mossy rocks, fallen logs, dense undergrowth
Range in Japan: Widespread in suitable forest and mountain habitats from Hokkaido to Kyushu
Diet: Small insects, spiders, larvae, and other tiny invertebrates
Season: Year-round resident in many areas; some birds may move lower in winter
Size: About 10–11 cm
Nesting: Dome-shaped nest built in roots, rock gaps, banks, or dense vegetation
Behavior: Very active and secretive; often raises its short tail; loud song for such a tiny bird
Conservation: Generally widespread, but healthy forest undergrowth and clean stream valleys are important
The Eurasian Wren is a tiny but powerful singer of Japan’s forests and mountain valleys. With its warm brown body, short upright tail, and quick movements, the ミソサザイ often hides among mossy rocks, roots, fallen logs, and dense undergrowth near streams. Its loud, rich song is much stronger than its small body suggests. This little forest bird brings a wild, lively feeling to Japan’s shaded ravines and cool woodland streams.
