Eurasian Treecreeper キバシリ Scientific name: Certhia familiarisThe Eurasian Treecreeper is a tiny forest bird with bark-colored brown upperparts, pale underparts, a long curved bill, and a stiff tail used for support while climbing. In Japan it is called キバシリ / Kibashiri, meaning roughly “tree runner,” because it creeps upward along tree trunks while searching bark cracks for insects and spiders. In Japan, it is mainly a resident bird of mountain and subalpine forests. It prefers coniferous forest, mixed forest, mature deciduous forest, and cool woodland with old trees. It is easy to miss because its back pattern blends perfectly with tree bark — tiny ninja bird, basically.

Eurasian Treecreeper キバシリ

The Eurasian Treecreeper is a tiny woodland bird often seen in mature forests, mountain woods, coniferous forests, mixed woodlands, and tree-rich areas in Japan. It has brown, finely patterned upperparts, pale underparts, a long curved bill, and a stiff tail that helps it cling to tree trunks.

This bird moves quietly up tree trunks in a spiral pattern, searching bark crevices for insects, larvae, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Its camouflage makes it easy to miss, but its delicate movement and thin calls reveal its presence in quiet forest habitats.
