Spotted NutcrackerホシガラスScientific name: Nucifraga caryocatactesThe Spotted Nutcracker is a mountain corvid, related to crows and jays. In Japanese it is called ホシガラス / Hoshigarasu, meaning “star crow,” because of the many white spots scattered across its dark brown body. It has a strong bill, broad wings, a short tail, and a bold white undertail area.In Japan, it is mainly a bird of subalpine and alpine mountain zones. It is closely linked with conifer forests and dwarf pine areas, especially where it can find pine seeds. In autumn and winter, some birds may move to lower mountain forests, but it is still not a normal lowland or city bird. Japanese sources list it from Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Sado, but its real habitat is mountain forest and high-elevation zones, not all areas evenly. For your map: do not mark all Japan as full strong range. Mountain regions of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, with stronger color on subalpine/alpine belts such as the Japanese Alps, Hokkaido mountains, and other high mountain areas.

Spotted Nutcracker ホシガラス

The Spotted Nutcracker is a mountain corvid found in coniferous forests, subalpine woodlands, and highland areas in Japan. It has dark brown plumage covered with many white spots, a strong pointed bill, and a short tail with white markings, giving it a bold and distinctive appearance.

This intelligent bird is closely associated with pine and conifer seeds. It collects and stores seeds in the ground or hidden places, remembering many cache sites later. Its loud calls, strong flight, and habit of moving through mountain forests make it a special bird of Japan’s highlands.
