Japanese Accentor カヤクグリScientific name: Prunella rubida The Japanese Accentor is a small, quiet mountain bird in the accentor family. It has a plain brown body, reddish-brown back, grayish underparts, a dark bill, and pale pinkish legs. At first glance it can look like a sparrow or bunting, but its soft brown tones and secretive behavior are good clues. It is mainly a mountain and subalpine bird in Japan. In summer, it is often found in alpine scrub, dwarf pine, bamboo grass, rocky mountain edges, and subalpine forest. In winter, some birds move lower into forest edges, shrubs, and foothills. For your map: do not mark all of Japan evenly. Show it mainly across Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and parts of Kyushu, with stronger emphasis on mountain regions. It breeds from Hokkaido through Honshu and Shikoku, and winters farther south including Kyushu. It is not a typical lowland city bird.

Japanese Accentor カヤクグリ

The Japanese Accentor is a small, quiet mountain bird found in alpine scrub, dwarf pine zones, rocky slopes, forest edges, and highland bushy areas in Japan. It has brownish plumage with fine streaking, a grayish face and breast, and a modest appearance that helps it blend into mountain vegetation.

Usually shy and unobtrusive, this bird often moves close to the ground among shrubs, rocks, and low plants while searching for insects, seeds, and small invertebrates. In the breeding season, its thin song may be heard from mountain slopes and open alpine scrub.
