It is strongly associated with the Japanese Alps, especially alpine zones with dwarf pine, rocky slopes, and high mountain vegetation. For your map: do not mark all Japan. Its Japanese range should be shown only in high alpine areas of central Honshu, especially the Northern, Central, and Southern Japanese Alps, plus nearby high mountain areas such as Tateyama/Norikura and Mt. Haku region. It is not a normal bird of Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku, lowlands, forests, or city areas. It is famous for changing plumage with the seasons. In winter it becomes mostly white, helping it blend into snow. In warmer seasons it turns brown, gray, and mottled, matching rocks and alpine plants. Males often show a red eyebrow-like comb above the eye.The Japanese name 雷鳥 / Raichō means “thunder bird.” It is said to appear more often in misty, rainy, or stormy mountain weather, when predators are less active.

Japanese Rock Ptarmigan ライチョウ

The Japanese Rock Ptarmigan is a rare alpine bird found in high mountain areas of central Japan. It lives above the tree line in rocky slopes, alpine meadows, dwarf pine zones, and snowy mountain habitats. Its plumage changes with the seasons, becoming mostly white in winter and brownish, mottled, and well-camouflaged in summer.

This bird is specially adapted to harsh mountain conditions. It feeds on alpine plants, buds, leaves, flowers, seeds, and small insects. Because it lives in fragile high-altitude environments, it is an important symbol of Japan’s alpine wildlife and mountain conservation.
