It has warm brown plumage, a grayish face, chestnut tones, and bold black-and-white markings on the face and throat, giving it a very distinctive appearance.

Usually shy and more often heard than seen, this bird spends much of its time walking on the ground while searching for seeds, shoots, berries, and small insects. Its loud, repeated calls often echo from dense vegetation, especially in the morning and evening.
