Scientific name: Ardea alba modesta Japanese name note: ダイサギ can include Great Egret forms; in Japan, チュウダイサギ / Eastern Great Egret and オオダイサギ / Great White Egret are often discussed separately depending on taxonomy. The Eastern Great Egret is a large, elegant white heron with a long neck, long black legs, and a dagger-like bill. It is one of the classic “white egrets” seen in Japan’s wetlands, rivers, rice fields, ponds, and coastal shallows. It is much larger than the Little Egret and generally slimmer and longer-necked than the Intermediate Egret. In breeding season, the bill can become darker and the bare skin around the face may turn greenish-blue. Outside breeding season, the bill is usually yellow. A Japanese government tourism describes the Great Egret as a large white bird about 84–94 cm, with a long strong bill, feeding in tidal flats, rice fields, marshes, and other watery habitats. The eastern great egret is a species of heron from the genus Ardea, usually considered a subspecies of the great egret. In New Zealand it is known as the white heron or by its Māori name kōtuku. It was first described by British ornithologist John Edward Gray in 1831

Eastern Great Egret ダイサギ

The Eastern Great Egret is a large, elegant white heron often seen in wetlands across Japan. It has pure white plumage, a long S-shaped neck, a sharp yellow bill, and long dark legs. Its graceful appearance makes it one of the most striking wading birds in marshes, riversides, and rice fields.

This bird usually hunts by standing still or walking slowly through shallow water, watching carefully for fish, frogs, insects, and other small animals. When prey comes close, it strikes quickly with its long bill. It is often seen alone, but may also gather with other herons and egrets in rich feeding areas.
